Unclaimed money

Unclaimed money

91 official government search portals, reviewed Aug 5, 2026. This sends you to the government’s own search, never to an intermediary.

Where to search

Search everywhere you have lived or worked, not only where you are now. Property with no known owner address escheats to the holder’s state, which is why so much American unclaimed property sits in Delaware.

Search every place you have ever lived, not just where you are now. Property is escheated by the holder’s state, which is often not yours.

    Worth knowing

The NAUPA-endorsed multi-state search. Free, and genuinely official — but it does not carry every state and its data can lag the state systems. An empty result here is NOT evidence that you have no unclaimed property. Always also search the site of every state you have lived in.

Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation — unclaimed funds from failed banks

    Cost to searchFree
    Entry reviewedAug 5, 2026

    Worth knowing

Deposits left unclaimed after a bank failure. There is a hard statutory cut-off: unclaimed insured deposits revert after the claim period expires, so this one genuinely expires in a way state unclaimed property usually does not.

National Credit Union Administration — unclaimed deposits

    Cost to searchFree
    Entry reviewedAug 5, 2026

    Worth knowing

The credit-union equivalent of the FDIC list. Credit union members are not covered by the FDIC search and are frequently missed.

US Department of Housing and Urban Development — FHA mortgage insurance refunds

    Cost to searchFree
    Entry reviewedAug 5, 2026

    Worth knowing

If you had an FHA-insured mortgage and paid it off or refinanced early, you may be owed an upfront-premium refund or distributive share. This is the single most aggressively targeted category for finder-fee letters — HUD states plainly that no fee is ever required.

  • OfficialFree to search

Internal Revenue Service — unclaimed tax refunds

    Cost to searchFree
    Entry reviewedAug 5, 2026

    Worth knowing

Unlike state unclaimed property, an unclaimed federal refund EXPIRES: you have three years from the return due date to file and claim it, after which it belongs to the Treasury permanently. If a user has unfiled years, this is urgent in a way nothing else in this file is.

  • OfficialFree to search

US Department of Labor — Abandoned Plan Database

    Cost to searchFree
    Entry reviewedAug 5, 2026

    Worth knowing

For 401(k) and other retirement plans whose sponsor went out of business, listing the qualified termination administrator now holding the money. EBSA also runs a Retirement Savings Lost and Found. The agency root is given; both tools are reachable from it.

  • OfficialFree to search

US Department of Veterans Affairs — unclaimed insurance funds

    Cost to searchFree
    Entry reviewedAug 5, 2026

    Worth knowing

Covers unclaimed proceeds from VA life insurance policies. It does not cover other VA benefits, and it is limited to policies issued by the VA rather than to service members generally. The id deliberately avoids "us-va-" because that prefix belongs to the Commonwealth of Virginia; "VA" means two different jurisdictions in American English and conflating them here would have collided two live entries.

Every portal carried

91 registers. Where a country runs no central register it is listed saying so — Germany, Japan and Hong Kong hold dormant money at the bank that has it, with no national search to run.

Once you have found something

Filing is free and you do it yourself: expect photo ID, the tax or national identity number on the record, and something linking you to the address it was reported under. The one hard deadline here is American — an unclaimed IRS refund expires three years after the return was due. State unclaimed property is usually held indefinitely.

Links go to the administering body’s own domain. If one does not resolve, find the programme through the state or national government’s own site rather than through a search engine — finder services rank highly for exactly these terms.
